UNIMA Australia is the Australian branch of UNIMA, the Union Internationale de la Marionnette. Formed in 1929 UNIMA is the longest running theatrical organisation in the world it is a member of the International Theatre Institute and UNESCO.
UNIMA Australia supports and connects Puppeteers, Puppetry Companies, and all people interested in Puppetry Arts through online updates, projects, events, festivals, and our bi-annual magazine Austrailan Puppeteer. The Australian Unima Centre was founded in 1970 and incorporated in 2004, our logo was designed by the renowned puppeteer Norman Hetherington, creator of Mr Squiggle. In 2008 Perth, Western Australia, played host to the UNIMA Congress, Conference and International Puppetry Festival. The UNIMA Congress is held every four years and 2008 was the first time it was hosted in Australia. Read more about our history here.
UNIMA aims to bring together people from around the world to contribute to the development of the art of puppetry, and to use it in the pursuit of human values such as peace and mutual understanding.
