Check out our amazing online Koala puppet workshop today run by Katherine Hannaford (@misskhannaford)! Everyone made their very own koala based on the Roly pattern by Project Puppet Huge thanks to Katherine for not only teaching us but also preparing the most wonderful puppet kits, complete with cut-out foam pieces, hand plates, rods, koala features (ears, eyes, nose, tongue and even uvulas!), contact adhesive, sewing kit and pre-sewn faux fur components (which she stitched all by hand!). Well done to our workshop participants, some of whom had never made puppets before. It was a fun and enriching experience for all! Katherine Hannaford has been building foam puppets for stage and television for 20 years. Last night the UNIMA Australia Committee had a special open meeting for any members wishing to partake and understand what goes on behind the scenes.Directly afterwards, we invited our friends from the Korean, Chinese, Indian and Japanese national centres. We were also joined by our two Australian councillors for the Asia Pacific Commission Richard Hart and Tony Riggio. We were honoured to be joined also by President of UNIMA International, Karen Smith and President of the UNIMA Asia Pacific Commission Tang Dayu.What followed was a wonderful showcase and discussion of puppetry arts in Asia and what began was the fostering of a newly connected creative community in puppetry arts. Happy World Puppetry Day! Here is a stunning video shared by UNIMA KOREA about 'Haeyneo' divers called "One Breath, HAENYEO". The theme of World Puppetry Day this year is Aquatic Life and Marine Worlds, and this film was inspired by Haeyneo and the sea. Haenyeo are women divers in Jeju Island, South Korea. They go free diving (i.e. with no breathing apparatus) for shellfish, seaweed and other seafood – which they sell to provide for their families. They dive between 5-20 metres each time, and can hold their breath for up to 2 minutes. They are one of the only matriarchal communities in the world. Their tradition that has lasted 600 years, and the eldest haenyeos are in their nineties. Jeju haenyeos were listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016.
