What a wonderfully inspiring and puppet-filled weekend in Sydney, Australia! Here are some highlights from a Large Scale Puppetry Workshop run by Perth-based Puppetry Designer Leon Hendroff, 9-10 November 2019.
Leon taught various principles and techniques of puppet making including animated textiles (puppet flags and woven netting), pattern making and collapsible puppets. The group then designed and made various puppets including flamingos, trees, fish, birds, a giant dog and even memories 😊
This workshop was presented by UNIMA Australia with special thanks to our venue sponsors Addison Road Community Centre and Reverse Garbage in Marrickville, NSW.

Wonderfully detailed article by Richard Bradshaw on Taiwanese Puppetry! Richard Bradshaw has been a full-time puppeteer since 1969. He has performed with his shadow puppets for audiences of children and adults in Europe, North America and Asia, making some 50 overseas tours. The text was written in early 2017 following his time in Taiwan in December 2016 as a guest to the 2016 Asia Pacific Traditional Arts Festival. ... See MoreSee Less

Great news about Warhorse returning to Australia!!We're delighted to announce that War Horse will return to Australia in 2020, with seasons at Regent Theatre, Melbourne from 10 January; Lyric Theatre, Sydney from 15 February; and Crown Theatre, Perth from 24 March.
Author Michael Morpurgo said: “War Horse is not my story. It is a story of the horses and men who went from all over the world to the First World War. It happens to be set in Devon in England, because that is where I live, where some 40 years ago I met an old man in the pub in my village who had been a young cavalry soldier in that terrible war.
“Stories know no barriers. Distance does not matter. History does matter. This is a story of us, of all of us. This is why I am so so pleased that the National Theatre’s uniquely wonderful play of War Horse is soon to be seen again in Australia. Joey belongs with you, as much as he does to us. He’s that horse, that one horse, that came home.” ... See MoreSee Less

There's still time to win a Double Pass to see 'Avenue Q' by the North Shore Theatre Company on Opening Night, Friday 26th April at 7.30pm! To enter, tag a friend in the comments below who you'd like to take to Avenue Q 🙂 A winner will be randomly drawn TONIGHT - Wednesday 24th April at 6pm AEST (Please note that recipients must be able to attend the show in Sydney on Friday 26th April at 7.30pm).
About the show: A puppet-filled comedy follows a group of twenty-somethings seeking their purpose in big-city life.
Winner of the Tony Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book, the hilarious Avenue Q tells the timeless story of a recent college graduate trying to find his way in the world. Set in New York City all the way out on Avenue Q (he couldn’t afford anything better), we are introduced to fresh-faced Princeton as he struggles to find his purpose: meeting friends, finding love, losing love, and finding it again, along the way. Inspired by the beloved children’s show Sesame Street, Avenue Q creates a puppet-filled world that is a little more reflective of the difficult, R-rated realities that we face when we learn that real life isn’t as simple as we dreamed it might be – but perhaps, suggests Avenue Q, life is all the more colourful and worthwhile for it.
We're excited to announce that the cast includes UNIMA Australia Member, Pete Davidson (Pete Xander), who will be playing the role of "Princeton" (one of the main characters).
When: April 26 - May 4, 2019
Where: Independent Theatre (269 Miller Street, North Sydney, NSW)
Note: for ADULT Audiences only (Rated R)
