We are very sad to inform you that Axel Axelrad, a Life Member of UNIMA Australia, has passed away. He died peacefully on 13th November 2018 at Angliss Hospital (VIC) aged 99 years.
An amazing puppet maker, Axel had an incredible career in puppetry over many decades and is responsible for a lot of the characters seen on Australian TV in the past 50 years, such as 'The Magic Circle Club', 'Adventure Island', the dog from 'Young Talent Time' and of course Ossie Ostrich from 'Hey Hey It's Saturday'. Migrating to Australia from Germany in 1950, Axel and his wife created company Lamont Puppets, supplying their incredible range of puppets to toy stores all over the world.
We have put together a special issue of the Oz Puppetry Email Newsletter (O.P.E.N.) dedicated to Axel, which you can read at www.unima.org.au/vale-axel-axelrad/

Check out this gorgeous performance by Curious Legends of 'The Tiger, the Jackal, and the Holy Man' for the 2018 October Riverlights Festival in Maitland, NSW on 13th October, 2018!
Curious Legends had the pleasure of collaborating with the Hunter Indian Community to create a floating performance on the Hunter River for the 2018 Maitland Riverlights Festival this October. Hugely successful, this involved the creation of an enormous illuminated tiger puppet, various shadow puppets, a unique soundscape, and video projection on display throughout the performance. The final result was showcased in front of some 1,500 people using 3 floating platforms and 2 enormous outdoor shadow screens. Their giant stingray and eagle puppets led the crowd down to the water, where the performance was held. A massive undertaking, their team is still in recovery from it! For more details about Curious Legends work, see their website: www.curiouslegends.com.au
